Perfectionism is probably a label many of you can identify with. It can feel debilitating, sucking all the energy and life out of you. We can often feel stuck in a never-ending loop, which can be counterproductive and immensely emotionally and mentally draining.
We can become so obsessed with minute details that we forget about the broader picture. It’s about learning to zoom out, like a camera. We’re constantly zooming in, and it’s important that we take a step back to observe the bigger picture and understand that there is beauty in zooming out.
I won’t lie - perfectionism is something that I’m still constantly working on. I used to mentally beat myself up every time I didn’t reach a certain standard or achievement. Through a lot of self-reflection and reshaping my mindset, I have been able to find freedom in the face of perfectionism.
It is possible to thrive and use perfectionism to your advantage!
Here are some things that have helped me over the years:
- Becoming aware of your thoughts, emotions, and responses: This can be achieved through many different ways including journaling or taking time in your day to be present without distractions, such as reflecting on a walk.
- Reshaping your mindset: This could involve going to therapy or identifying the negative thoughts and beliefs you may have toward your own high expectations and standards, like an all-or-nothing mindset. Challenge those thoughts. Brainstorm. What is the FACTUAL evidence for or against this thought? What is the actual likelihood of this happening? What are other ways to view this situation?
- Practising self-compassion and self-care. Perfectionism can often make us feel like we have to be productive all the time. But remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Don’t wait until you’re completely drained to rest because YOU DESERVE REST and self-care if you weren’t productive. This can be scheduling even an hour in your day to read a book, watch a TV show, paint, or practice mindfulness meditation.
Be patient with yourself, treat yourself like you would a friend.
There is so much freedom that comes from reshaping what perfectionism means to you.
You are not alone in this journey. You’ve got this! xx
