It's Okay to Ask for Help

Between ages 12 and 13, Sienna first noticed they were struggling with their mental health. However, they say, “It took me until about 6-7 months ago when I finally left my dad's house due to domestic violence and alcohol and I realised that I needed proper help.”

It’s been a tough journey for Sienna, yet they are bravely working on healing and recovery. “Going to therapy has been the most helpful part of my recovery. Also, attending my dance classes has become an outlet. It’s a space where I walk in, just breathe, and we have a few laughs for an hour to an hour and a half.” Since starting dance and their recovery journey, Sienna has become an assistant teacher at one of their dance studios!

Something Sienna wishes more people knew about their experience is, “I can’t express my emotions and feelings in the same way a neurotypical person can.”

For Sienna, being able to use their experiences to help others has helped them. “I’ve been there. I know everything seems really dark and hard at the moment, but I promise you, wholeheartedly, that it gets better.” They want everyone to know that “It’s ok to receive help and things get better.

Since choosing recovery, Sienna says, “I’m not the person I was 15 years ago let alone 6-7 months ago. I’m working on changing myself for the better.” When times get tough, their favourite quote is, “You don’t have to be sorry for leaving and growing up.” - Harry Styles’ ‘Matilda.’

Sienna’s message to anyone struggling is simply to remember that “Things do get better!”
