THE FIGHT IS WORTH IT

I live with PTSD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. My journey started when I was 10 years old. Bullying and Anxiety were a daily battle - I was too ashamed to speak, so I only reached out for support when I was 16 years old after losing a grandparent.

After telling a friend I self-harmed, she gave me contact details for therapy and it changed my life. I have also always loved singing and joined a choir, which has really helped me heal. Talking, journaling, singing and therapy have all been crucial in my healing.

Throughout this journey, I’ve seen that there are some truly amazing people out there, and I’ve realised other people feel exactly the same as me. I am proud of myself for speaking up and overcoming the shame I experienced. Still, there are challenges. I struggle with phobias that I find hard to talk about, and I’m constantly fighting to be the best version of myself, but the fight is worth it.

One of the hardest parts was being in situations where no one understood what I was going through, and they couldn’t see past the smile on my face. I wish teachers had a better understanding of mental health and the support out there.

If I could give advice to someone going through a similar situation, it would be this: there are other people going through the same thing. I know there are times where healing feels impossible, but life is worth living and you are stronger than you think you are. It’s okay to not be okay all of the time.

I recently turned 21, which was amazing after thinking I wouldn’t be here to see my 21st birthday. Now I’m working two jobs and thriving in a choir of 500 people where we raise money for charity.

My favourite reminder to hold onto during tough times is: “You’ve got this, you have overcome so much so you can overcome this.”
