The New Year Doesn't Need a New You

Now, as we're almost halfway through January of a new year, you've probably heard your fair share of 'new year, new you!' along with resolutions and what this year will hold for everyone. For some, this is a great way to start the year, however, for those struggling, it can bring up a lot of difficult feelings.

Putting a lot of pressure on us to change just because of a new year doesn't help. It's essential to remember that YOU are great. You don't need to change. You don't need to become a new you. The new year doesn’t need a new you, it just needs you.

I have personally had thoughts of, ‘well, what now? Another year of the same old same old?’ ‘What am I doing with my life?’ and ‘am I doing what I should be doing at this point in time?’ among others. This kind of thinking puts an insurmountable amount of pressure on us to have a plan for the year. Sometimes, this can feel like a huge task and can create a lot of stress and anxiety.

However, let this be your reminder: YOU are enough. YOU are doing great. You don’t need a big plan, you don’t need to have every single month, week, day or hour mapped out. You are where you need to be. As long as you’re here, you are doing amazingly well. Everyone grows at their own pace, life isn’t a race or a checklist that you need to complete. Your life is unique to you.

You aren’t behind in life. You don’t need to know what you’re doing this year. You made it through another year and that’s something to be proud of. You’re here now and that’s something to be proud of. You’re continuing to fight and that’s something to be proud of.
